Glitz and Glam WAVE: eShakti Leather Trim Poplin Dress

For this month's Ahead of the Curve post I wanted to do something different. Glitz and Glam is our theme and I didn't want to go the traditional route. I've done many classic glamorous looks in the past. I started thinking about glam and my brain wandered to the 70s and glam rock. I love the glam rock idea so much, but I didn't think I could pull out a full look I would be satisfied with. I just don't have a wardrobe for 70s glam. I did, however have the wardrobe for a new wave look of sorts. With new wave stemming from the punk & glam movement of the 70s, I could just kind of mash the whole thing up.

Some of my influences for this look

I've been loving all the edgy leather and leather look embellishments out there. I think I've said this before, but a huge part of me will always be stuck in the 80s. Leather, Spikes, and Zippers Forever!! I will be the grandma rocking a leather jacket and purple hair.
While perusing eShakti a couple weeks ago, I came across this leather trim poplin dress.. I have been shopping at eShakti for a little over a year and I have not come across any edgier styles. I was delighted when I found this one. I love their vintage inspired designs and beautiful embroidered prints, but sometimes I find their stuff all starts looking similar. While this dress is one of their classic silhouettes, it's made more current with the leather look accents. Faux leather covers both shoulders and is banded at the bottom of the dress. Down the front is a faux leather trimmed working zipper. The dress is completed with a faux leather belt. I wanted more of a wrap around belted look so I opted to add a couple extra black studded belts.
Overall I'm happy with this dress. It fits perfect. I normally order custom, but for this item I just ordered the off rack 28. It is very light. Much lighter them I thought it would be with the leather. Light is fine, but the faux leather is very thin. I would image I will have to be careful. I've had problems with faux leather tearing before. This is not counting the pair of faux leather pants my thighs chewed up and swallowed back in 2001. This item is dry-clean only. I have hand washed their dry-clean only items before and ironed them low inside out. I don't think I will risk it with this one. I don't want to chance melting the faux leather.

ModCloth Floral Flashback Dress

This is my second purchase from ModCloth. I picked this one up on sale for only $22 shipped! It is no longer on sale, but you can still get it here. I ordered the 4X and it fits pretty perfect. I think actually this dress would fit someone 5X. This dress is 100% polyester and there's lot of stretch to it. The fabric is gorgeously designed with an overlay of flocked crimson flowers atop a black background. It feels so much like to the holiday season. I know I will get lots of use out of this dress.

My two blogging sisters Affinity and Cherie also purchased this dress. Check out how it looks on them!!

If your a new customer to ModCloth you can use this LINK to get $15 off your first order. Happy Shopping!

A Christmas Story: Leg Lamp Skirt

"FRA-GEE-LAY"

"Are you kidding? Stick my tongue to that stupid pole? That's dumb!"

"It--it-- it was... Soap poisoning."

Just wanted to do a fun tribute to one of my favorite Christmas films. I have been making A Christmas Story jewelry for Everyday is like Halloween for a couple of years. This year it occurred to me it would be really swell to have a leg lamp skirt, to go with my jewelry. The lovely Linda of Toot Sweet Skirts custom made this piece for me. Totally check out her stuff. She makes amazing kitchy skirts in every size. She will also work with you to custom make your dream item.  She is totally " A +++++++++++++++++++"

ModCloth: Ladies Brunch Cupcake Dress

I recently made my very first ModCloth purchase. I have been looking at ModCloth for over a year, but wasn't sure of sizing. Their stuff can be pricey and normally here in Canada you get hit with duties and courier fees. These things have been holding be back from ordering.
When a friend posted a $15 off coupon and a link to this dress that was already 50% off, I couldn't refuse. I ended up getting the dress for $25.

I can't say I have ever worn a cutesy Christmas dress, but I thought the print was super sweet. You can't tell from my photos, but the cupcakes have soft silver glitter added to the tops of them. It gives the dress just a little added touch of shimmer, which is nice. This dress has pockets as well that is always a super touch.

I wore this dress to my father in Laws Birthday dinner. I think it was the perfect dress for this event. I had quite a few people come up to me at the buffet to comment on my dress.

I ordered this dress in a size 4X. The dress is 90% Polyester, 10% Spandex so I figured it would have a tiny bit of stretch. I was surprised to find that it did not. That was fine because the 4X did fit perfect. I'm a 26/28 bottom. For the dolls out there that have been concerned with sizing like I was, you can totally make this style of dress work at my size.

I styled my Christmas cupcakes dress with a crop fur collar sweater. I picked this up at Torrid last winter. You can no longer get this sweater. However, they currently have this jacket that is equally saucy. My winter white tights are from We Love Colors in size E.

If your a new customer and interested in picking something up from Modcloth, here is a coupon for $15 off!!! They currently have lots of sales for the holidays.

I got the jitterbug: Forever 21s Statement-Making Letter Print Dress

Letter Print Dress in Size 3X

When I peeped this totally rad Statement-Making Letter Print Dress at Forever 21, it instantly put the boom boom into my heart. In fact, I started to hum Wham's 1984 hit "Wake me up before you go-go". The song reminds me so much of this time and the big bold letter and number prints both men and woman were wearing. Immediately I started to think about the accessories that would make this outfit a complete modernized 84 flash back.

In order to rock the look hard, I knew my outfit would need some neon pink. It worked out perfect that I have pink hair. I loved neon pink so much back in the day. In 1984, I was a mere 10 years of age and Madonna was my everything. Material girl was released the same year as Wake me up before you go-go and I must have watched the material girl video a million time. Madonna in that pink dress...GORG!!

What goes better than bright purple with neon pink? NOTHING! My legs are bathed in We Love Colors  Violet plus size Nylon/Lycra tights size E. We love colors tights are by far my favorite. The colors are always beautiful and never turn opaque when stretched over my legs. They are long enough, but don't tend to bag in the crouch. I have stockpiled a bunch in my favorite colors and hope Santa brings me more.

To complete my look I added some modern touches. Leather and Studs and Spikes, OH MY! Everywhere you look this season you will find these three accents. I find adding these items makes your outfit look just the little bit more bad ass. I'm all for bad ass. My boots were from Torrid last season. You can pretty much find spiked boots everywhere now. My glasses are also from Forever 21. My belt was a gift from a friend and my headband was ordered off Ebay for $1.96!!

Push Th' Little Daisies....Fat Girl Flower Power.

I can't help, but think of Ween's Push Th' Little Daisies every time I see a daisy. It's delightful and a curse at the same time. Push is one of those songs that get stuck in  your head. While it's fun and quirky for the first 20 minutes or so, after a while you just want to pull your hair out. I apologize in advance to anyone who clicked the video above. Ahhhh the 90s...Your coming back with a vengeance aren't you.

This month's Ahead Of The Curve blog hop themes "Big girls can't wear prints?" I say, "screw that noise!" Big girls can wear anything they damn well please and look good wearing it. I think most of us have fallen victim to believing the fashion rules handed down by our mothers or grandmothers. At least I feel most women my age have. It took me a long time to break away from these rules and learn to rock something that wasn't black. I have spent the better part of my life cloaked in only black, trying to hide every roll and bump. I always told myself , "Stina you only like black because you are goth" *Cough* Poppycock! While I have always lived and love a darker spookier lifestyle wearing only black clothes really was mostly about hiding my body. After all goths can wear red and purple too:) HA!

So here I stand older and much wiser kicking forth some daisy print fierceness. If you had told me five years ago I would be wearing a primary colored daisy print dress, I would have thought you'd lost your mind. Today I'm still myself all goth spooky, but I'm wearing what I want and not giving two eff's what anyone else thinks.

Talk about a 360!! I just took a little inventory of my blog and there's no all black outfits! Huh! What is going on? Sure, I have many photos that convey my love for the macabre, but it doesn't have to be about hiding my body in black anymore. The whole thing is very freeing. Hold up, I think I might be having a moment of enlightenment here...

FREEDOM!!!

For anyone that might be interested my dress is from eShakti. While this dress is no longer in stock you can get oodles of amazing dresses on this site.
